When we think of saints, we mostly think of gloomy, sad-faced, and contemplative-looking church frescoes. Throughout history, saints have sacrificed their lives for a very important and noble cause, for God, for truth, for their homeland, and for other people. Are there exceptions? Nowadays, who could live fair all her/his life, always to lead by example, so that s/he is not driven by material issues and her/his own interests? Who are the ones that can make the world a better place? Can all expectations be met at once. Should one meet all expectations at once?
Many believe that we live in an accelerated, soulless, material modern age that creates new and attractive role models that we can look up to and easily identify with.
Are they all saints?
“We need saints, saints for the 21st century with a spirituality appropriate to our new time. We need saints to live in the world, to sanctify the world and to not be afraid of living in the world by their presence in it. We need saints that drink Coca-Cola, that eat hot dogs, that surf the internet and that listen to their iPods. We need saints … that are not afraid or embarrassed to eat a pizza or drink a beer with their friends. We need saints who love the movies, dance, sports, theatre. We need saints that are open sociable normal happy companions. We need saints who are in this world and who know how to enjoy the best in this world without being callous or mundane.”

Amikor szentekre gondolunk, legtöbbször komor, bús arcú és merengő tekintetű templomi freskókra asszociálunk. A történelem folyamán a szentek egy nagyon fontos és nemes célért áldozták életüket, Istenért, az igazságért, a hazáért és más emberekért. Vannak kivételek? Manapság ki az, aki képes egész életében tisztességesen élni, mindig példamutatóan cselekedni, úgy, hogy ne az anyagiak és ne a saját érdekei vezéreljék? Kik azok, akik jobbá tehetik a világot? Meg lehet felelni minden elvárásnak egyszerre? Meg kell felelni minden elvárásnak egyszerre?
Sokan úgy vélik, hogy egy felgyorsult, lelketlen, materiális modern korban élünk, mely új és vonzó példaképeket teremt, akikre felnézhetünk és akikkel könnyen azonosulni tudunk.
Ők mind szentek?
„Szükségünk van korszerű szentekre, XXI. századi szentekre, akik erre korszakra alkotják meg a lelkiségüket. Szükségünk van a világban élő szentekre, akik nem félnek a világban élni. Szükségünk van kólát és hot-dogot fogyasztó, internetező és iPodot használó szentekre. Szükségünk van olyan szentekre, akik nem szégyellnek a hétvégén sört inni vagy pizzát enni a barátaikkal. Szükségünk van olyan szentekre, akik szeretik a mozit, a színházat, a zenét, a táncot, a sportot. Szükségünk van társaságot kedvelő szentekre, akik nyitottak, normálisak, barátságosak, vidámak és jó barátok. Szükségünk van olyan szentekre, akik e világban élnek, és meg tudják ízlelni a világ jó és tiszta dolgait, de mégsem világiasodnak el…”

"Saint Sebastian, who is revered as a martyr, is among the most popular saints. Sebastian was an officer in the Roman imperial guard, who sought to lead his fellow soldiers to the faith and encouraged imprisoned Christians. Eventually, he was sentenced to death at a young age due to his Christian faith. His execution was carried out by his fellow soldiers: he was tied to a stake in an open field and shot to death with arrows."

He secretly performed marriage ceremonies for couples, even among soldiers. In Anglo-Saxon countries, his feast day on February 14th became widely celebrated as Valentine's Day, a secular holiday dedicated to love, starting in the late 20th century. In Hungary, it became known and popular as Valentine's Day from the 1990s onwards."

"Saint Vitus (also known as Vid) is a young early Christian martyr and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, known as the protector of youthful purity. As a helper saint, he is invoked against various illnesses, including Saint Vitus' Dance, a condition characterized by rapid, involuntary movements of the face and body. It is believed that he became the patron saint of dancers, actors, and comedians due to the cultic circular dances associated with his veneration."

"Saint Christopher belongs to the group of saints whose existence cannot be historically proven, yet they are highly revered. He is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, an ancient Christian martyr. He is perhaps the most popular figure in folk religion. According to one story, Christopher carried a child on his shoulders across a swollen river, and it was revealed that he was carrying Christ himself. He became the patron saint of travelers, wanderers, and sailors, and his image is still carried by many drivers and motorcyclists today."
